Someone loaned me a tea kettle

I posted our questions about moving to Nicaragua in part because I felt God urging me to be honest — about our fears, our doubts, and our worries. But after this weekend, I wonder if it was just so we would stop burning the bottom of our sauce pan?

Let me explain… I wrote last week that a simple tea kettle has essentially become a symbol of our commitment to walk this path of faith. Our kettle caught on fire last fall [seriously] and was sent to the dump. At the time, we had just agreed to prepare for a move to Nicaragua, regardless of whether it looked like that move might happen. In other words, we decided to act as if we are going, right up until the beginning of April, when we would make some sort of final decision.

Acting like we’re going involves a whole slew of things, not the least of which is refraining from purchasing new items that we would not take with us. A new kettle fit into that category, so it was cast as our first member of the “not replacing now” team.

I am typically surprised by the folks who actually read my ramblings, and this was no exception. On Friday, I was picking my daughter and her friend up from youth group when the host commented, “Oh, I have a tea kettle for you.”

Um, excuse me?

It took me a minute to realize she had read my post and had not, in fact, bugged my house or gone all big brother on me.  Oh… that’s right, I told the whole world about burning the saucepan (more than once) because we forgot we were using it as a tea kettle.

At first I wondered if taking her tea kettle might jinx it or something. [Superstitious, anyone?] But she assured me it was just an extra tea kettle and that she was only loaning it to me.

OK. I will gladly accept your loaned tea kettle. My saucepan thanks you, my smoke detector thanks you, and I thank you. :)
