Watch TV shows on your iPhone

I found this great guide to watching TV shows on your iPhone, written by Etan Horowitz for the Orlando Sentinel. Check it out:

Apple’s iPhone is great for watching TV shows that you downloaded on your computer and loaded onto the device. But since the iPhone can’t play Flash-based Web videos, there aren’t that many ways to stream full episodes of popular TV shows for free. But there are some:

  • To watch full episodes of popular NBC shows such as ” 30 Rock,” “The Office” and ” Heroes,” visit m.nbc.com on your iPhone and click on “Video” and then “Full Episodes.” Once you select a show to watch, click on the first part to watch it.
  • Download the free “Joost” app from the iPhone app store to watch full episodes of TV shows and movies. Much of the programming on here is obscure, or from other countries, but you can watch classic shows such as “The Lone Ranger” and “Star Trek” or other shows such as “Punk’d.” There doesn’t appear to be a way to browse through full episodes of shows.
  • Download the free “TV.com” app from the iPhone app store to watch full episodes of shows from CBS including ” How I Met Your Mother,” ” Jericho,” “NCIS,” and ” Survivor.” You can also watch full episodes of classic shows such as ” Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Family Ties,” “Twin Peaks” and “The Love Boat.” You can browse through full episodes of shows.
  • To watch popular shows from the CW including ” Gossip Girl,” ” 90210, ” Smallville” and others, visit iphone.cwtv.com on your iPhone browser. When you click on “Video,” you can search for full episodes of particular shows.
  • With the exception of Joost, which requires a Wi-Fi connection, all of the methods will work best with a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. If you are riding in a car or train, the quality of the video may fluctuate, depending on your connection speed. With all of these options, you can tilt your phone to watch the video in landscape mode.

My favorite grocery bags

Pack-n-Tote BagsAlmost two years ago I bought into the whole “green” concept and actually bought reusable grocery bags. My husband laughed at me and figured it was a phase that would last – at most – 2 trips to the grocery store. Now, many many trips later, I’m happy to say he was wrong!

Not only do these bags hold up, they can handle up to 40lbs of groceries each! (In case you’re wondering, that’s the same as 4-6 of those plastic grocery bags. Dude, I can pack these things solid and still carry them myself!) I shop for my family of 4 about 2-3 times a month using two of these Pack-n-Tote bags, plus one reusable bag I got from Ikea that is perfect for juice and milk. The Pack-n-Tote bags actually connect to your cart, making it easy to bag your groceries at the end of the trip. I use one for cold stuff, and the other for dry/pantry items.

The clerks are always commenting on how much can fit in my bags, and other customers frequently ask where I bought them. So, I figured it’s about time I post about them here. I LOVE carrying 2-3 bags from my car to the kitchen, instead of making 10 trips with all those cumbersome plastic things that are typically ripped by the time I make it inside. And because I’ve had them for so long, I can now safely say that it’s not a phrase. I will be using these bags as long as they last (and then I’ll get some more).

My only request for the manufacturers? On the off chance you’re reading this, can you find a way to make sure they always make it back to my car for the next trip so I’m never without my favorite grocery bags? ;-)

There’s an App for That…

Running Trainer 5kI love my iPhone, that’s a given. But this morning I wasn’t exactly “feelin’ the love” about that little contraption. I was walking along a peaceful road near my house, when a jarring voice cuts through the silence of my headphones and commands, “Run 2 Minutes.” My lungs screamed against this command, but I attempted the second of the two-minute runs in today’s program.

Why? Because last week I downloaded an app called Running Trainer 5k. I have had a couple of friends start training for a 5k, and I thought “sure, why not? it’ll be good for me, right?” Ummm… now I’m not so sure about that.

It starts out on day one with a couple of run/walk segments, each one minute long. Then it switches to two-minute segments, alternating between running and walking. I made it through two of those running segments (two minutes long) successfully. Then, when Ms. Trainer said “Run 3 Minutes”, I might have cursed at her in my head a bit, and kept right on walking. I am so out of shape!

Why am I sharing such a pathetic part of myself? Really it’s just to point out that there’s an app for that! The Running Trainer 5k app keeps track of how far you’ve run (with the GPS) and even marks it on a map. (See the screen capture for an example – although it is NOT from my session this morning!) As already mentioned, it tells you when to walk and when to run, and increases the difficulty each day, so you’re running 5k by the end of 10 weeks. Well, that’s the intention at least. We’ll see how well it does with me ;-) .
